Separation anxiety is a state of mind where the dependant fears being separated from its supporter. Dog is the best friend a man will ever have. This point is emphasized by numerous everyday sayings which show the characteristics which are common to both man and dog. Pet owners the world over would go to the end of the world, for the sake of their pet. They are among the best watchmen and their skills in various fields like hunting and fetching have made them indispensable to many pet owners. The dogs become too attached to their owners and this leads to a kinds of disorder known as anxiety disorder.

Dogs resort to digging because of their innate need to hide things. This is also related to their talents in assisting the hunter while fetching the kill. Some dogs become addicted to digging because they have too much time on their hands and will probably dig even inside the house. They will rip up the carpet and books, in the manner of digging.

The problems of the dog must be seen through the eyes of the dog to really understand it. These pack animals have a tendency to congregate, much like humans. Where the communication lines differ is in the way the senses work. The dogs smell each other out before they see the other. Humans tend to use sound and sight to communicate. So, when a dog is barking, it means he has smelt someone he knows. Training your dog is therefore a problem which will be best handled by those who understand the psychology of the dogs, the professionals. They know which breed needs to be taught to heel and which one needs to be taught not to jump on others.

Excessive energies of dogs often help in the development anxiety disorders. Their excessive energies need to be channelized if you are to have a lovable pet in the house. Sometimes, some scents may trigger of their excitement and you will find them tearing around the yard as if it is on fire. Some dogs may become very attached to their owners and will prevent them from leaving the house in the mornings. This behavior is noticeable among those who like to exercise and take their dog along. It is a matter of priorities, and if you were to put things in their proper places you will notice how easily the problem is solved.

Big dogs like Great Danes and St.Bernards dislike confined spaces. The concrete confines of the city may make them miserable. Similarly sporting dogs such as Irish Setters and Retrievers may need a lot of exercising to keep them in a healthy shape. It is necessary for you to realize one thing when you are training your dog. It understands leadership much more than love and sympathy. It is way the senses are oriented.

Letting your dogs to walk around and fraternize with other dogs is alright. You will however need to keep a watch over them when they are in heat, or when they are having disease. Ornamental dogs need extra care and grooming. Big dogs eat a lot and need a lot of space. They also need a lot of exercise and plenty of attention when they are sick. Communicating with the pets will seem impossible if you try to achieve it overnight. However, if you space your training, to get the responses you need, over a period of time you will probably succeed. Be sure to let your pet know that it is alright to feel happy, and show it sometimes too.

Large breeds of dogs get a bum rap for being aggressive, violent animals, but in quite a few cases, it is really small breed dogs that really bite. Smaller dogs’ reputation as adoring, cuddly, cute companions might be deserved, however a badly handled small dog is often much more unsafe than a pit bull. Knowing the factors behind aggressive dog behavior can help owners lower the chances of their dog harming someone and help stop the aggression altogether.

As funny as it might sound, lots of smaller dogs really do suffer from insecurity because of their size. In the event you observe aggressive dog behavior only if people are standing or walking around, odds are, your dog is fearful of being stepped or sat on. Be very careful to not pick up or coddle your dog when it starts barking at people walking by; it may identify that as a reward, and instead of calming down, will just become even more obnoxious. As an alternative, remove the dog from the area while individuals are moving around and pay no attention to the barking. Permit the dog back into the room only after it has quieted down and everyone is sitting down.

Another typical reason small dogs tend to bite is because they have been mistreated by a prior owner. This is especially true of dogs that are naturally loud and “yappy.” Once again, the very best option is to take the dog from the area and ignore any efforts to get your attention until finally your dog is quiet. Provide a quiet, safe place from which your dog can watch you and your guests until it decides that nobody is really a threat.

Charging is actually an aggressive dog behavior that should never be tolerated for any kind of reason. Smaller dogs will often charge at people they don’t know, and even close members of the family, to display their dominance. Under no circumstances permit your dog to dominate a human! Address charging swiftly and firmly; keep a spray bottle of water near the door and any other place in which charging is very likely, and use it. Spray the dog directly in the face and tell it, “no,” in a loud, clear voice. Water will surprise the dog, and it will soon find out that charging is inappropriate. If this technique seems cruel, bear in mind that small dogs could be killed by a single kick by a terrified child.

Although mouthing could be playful in some dogs, and is usually harmless, dogs must learn that using their teeth on a person is completely wrong. Mouthing can sometimes cause accidental biting, particularly when smaller children are playing with your dog, which means that all mouthing, nipping, and biting need to be discouraged. If licking is satisfactory in your household, you can encourage licking instead of biting by placing butter, bacon grease, or salad dressing on your hands. Allow your dog to lick it off, yet move away and say, “no,” if the dog tries to nip or mouth you. Eventually, your dog will learn that biting results in losing a treat, and will quit trying to bite.

For dogs who are truly out of control, skilled training is the next step. A good trainer will work with you and your dog to establish the causes of the aggression, and will then work one step at a time to train your pet to behave. As a final resort, however, some dogs may require regular medication to control their behavior. In the event that training does not help, speak to the vet about prescribing a mild sedative, and buy a good kennel to keep your guests safe.

A lot of people love a new puppy, with their cuteness and soft fur, but most people do not look forward to one of the main things associated with a new pet, which is potty training. For many pet owners, and pets, this process can prove to be frustrating.

While some techniques for training your puppy may work well for you, they may not work very well for other people.

For example: Some old-school ways of training involve crude ways to try and let the dog know that it has done something bad, but how would a dog know that?

Some people use methods such as rubbing the dogs nose in the mess, which seems to rarely work for many people and is considered inhumane.

The simple truth is this. Your dog has no idea that he is doing something wrong, because a dog does not live his life thinking that way. It seems impossible to think that a pet would walk into a new house and start using the bathroom on the carpet to be “bad”, don’t you agree?

Very simply put, a dog does not have a way of knowing that the bathroom is outside, so if he has to go, he will pick a spot that seems perfect at that moment, but not out of spite.

While house training can be a real pain for a lot of pet owners, it is a necessary evil that you must deal with when you bring a new pet into the house.

Working with a pet, and paying attention to its habits is a great way to get to know him, and also a great way to find out which habits would be better off broken.

When potty training a puppy dog, it is helpful to keep these tips in mind:

* Realize that your dog has no idea of what right or wrong is, and that accidents are bound to happen

* Try to use a feeding and/or walking schedule with your dog. A schedule will help him use the bathroom at the same times, and in the same general places.

* Using a clicker – This can teach the dog that a behavior followed by a clicking sound can come with a reward, or perhaps a punishment.

A puppy that is well-trained and happy will be much better of a pet to you than one that does whatever comes to his mind at will. Correcting behavioral issues now, can lead to a much happier partnership later for you and your new pet.

Wally was exhausted in trying to learn various potty training techniques for puppies, so he had to find a better way. He writes about puppies and their ways at his dog training website.

Welcoming a brand new puppy into the family is a really exciting experience. Dog owners across the world can attest to the fact that there’s absolutely nothing that can compare with the love and affection a dog can give to its people. Even so, a puppy will need to be taught certain rules that it must comply with to continue to keep a harmonious relationship with its people. This article reveals a number of basic puppy training guidelines to help out new puppy owners.

The initial thing to be done for a new puppy would be to have him looked at by a vet to ensure that its shots are complete and that it’s healthy enough to undergo a training program. One of the basic points that dog owners must know is that dogs thrive on routine. So with regards to potty training there needs to only be one designated spot for each specific activity such as an eating place, a toilet place, and also a sleeping place.

There has to be a specific routine of walking, feeding, and training your puppy. Water and food will need to be monitored closely simply because overfeeding it will result in the untimely requirement to relieve themselves. The very first thing to invest in when one is giving basic puppy training is an adjustable collar and a three-in-one training leash. Toys and chewable treats should additionally be readily available at all times.

Puppies tend to learn quite quickly, especially if the training entails good encouragement and correction approaches. Once the puppy does a behavior properly the person should reward it by giving the puppy a few treats or by simply saying “good boy” or “good girl” even while gently stroking its fur. The most vital issue here is timing. The reward should be offered immediately after the behavior is carried out to make sure that the puppy understands that he should duplicate that behavior in order to receive a reward. Humans will need to in addition be firm with regards to basic puppy training. You should only give treats when a behavior is performed properly and not too much, for example when it offers you that adorable puppy look.

In regards to potty training one of the most preferred methods is paper training. That is done by spreading old newspapers in the areas in which the puppy usually relieves itself. For the first few times the puppy will probably miss the spot however, if the human keeps a soiled newspaper in the chosen toilet location the puppy will have the tendency to sniff out the smell and follow it. It is going to then recognize that this particular spot is where it should do its business.

People must realize that it takes awhile for puppies to fully grasp the rules in the house. So a lot of patience and commitment is necessary to properly train it. Humans just need to stretch their patience out a little more and gradually the efforts will pay off.

We’ve grown accustomed to the image of a dog riding in a car with his head sticking out of the window. It seems like an activity all canines would enjoy. In reality, many fear riding in cars to the point they will resist getting into one. This can create a number of problems for owners.

For example, suppose you need to take your pet to his veterinarian. Or, suppose you want to take him to a new park, or to visit a friend. If he refuses to climb into your vehicle, these and other activities will be difficult.

Fortunately, there are ways to help your canine become comfortable with riding in cars. As with shaping most behavioral problems, doing so takes time. Below, we’ll explain how the phobia develops in the first place, and offer several suggestions to help your pet overcome it.

Possible Reasons Dogs Fear Car Rides

A common reason dogs fear riding in automobiles is because they have become sick while doing so in the past. Dogs learn to associate their experiences with certain stimuli. If your pet suffered from nausea and vomiting, he may have associated riding in a car with that experience.

Another reason involves the lack of familiarity your canine may have with riding in vehicles. Even if you brought him home from the breeder’s facility in your car, he may not remember the experience. Or, someone may have been holding him, insulating him from the vibrations and the quickly-changing scene outside the windows. If he is introduced to the scent, the vibrations, and the sights for the first time, it can be startling.

Many dogs fear car rides because they are always taken to the veterinarian or groomer during trips. They associate the ride with the destination. If your canine dislikes going to the vet, and that is the only place you take him in the car, he may learn to loathe climbing inside.

Some canines have been abandoned by their owners, who drove them to the shelter or pound. Here, the animals learn to associate car rides with abandonment. If you care for a dog that was adopted from a shelter, and observe him refusing to get into your vehicle, this could be the reason. He may fear being abandoned again.

How To Help Your Pet Overcome His Anxiety

First, avoid forcing your dog to get into your car. Doing so will only strengthen his aversion, and make it more difficult for him to overcome his phobia. Instead, use treats to encourage him to walk toward your vehicle. Realize he may be unwilling to climb inside during his first few encounters. Be patient, and praise him each time he makes progress.

Second, when trying to entice your canine to get into your car, open as many doors as possible, including the rear hatch. This lets him know he won’t be confined once he steps inside. Again, give him treats and praise for encouragement, and to help him associated the cab of your vehicle with a good experience.

Third, once your dog has finally summoned the courage to climb inside your vehicle, climb in next to him. Leave the doors open, and begin petting and praising him. When he seems comfortable, close one of the doors. After a few minutes, close another. Then another. Eventually, you want to reach the point where he can remain calm with all the doors closed.

Fourth, turn your vehicle on. Let the engine idle so your canine will become used to the vibrations. Provide a few treats to help him remain calm. When he seems ready, start driving.

During the first few weeks, keep the trips short, and take your dog to places he’ll enjoy (e.g. park, beach, etc.). This teaches him that car rides are nothing to fear, and often lead to fun experiences. With time, your once-fearful dog will look forward to them.

If your pet becomes tense whenever others approach items he considers valuable, it is a sign that he is inclined to guard his resources. For example, he might stiffen his body when another animal approaches his favorite toy. This is normal behavior among dogs. In the wild, their survival is dependent on preventing other animals from taking food and other supplies. Within a pack, the entire family will gather to protect their resources from would-be marauders.

Between two canines, confrontations rarely escalate over toys, food, and other items. The animal that “owns” the resources will send a clear signal to the other. This might include curling his lip to show his teeth, making is body rigid, and even snarling at the other animal. The normal outcome is for the second pet to simply walk away, giving the first one a wide berth.

Even though resource guarding is normal behavior among dogs, it can lead to problems when it is directed toward people. We’ll describe how this occurs, and offer several tips for curbing the habit. We’ll also provide suggestions for preventing it in the first place.

When The Behavior Is Aimed At People

This commonly happens with food. When a dog receives his meal, he may feel the need to protect it from others while he eats. When his owner approaches him during a meal, he may stiffen, and begin to growl. If his owner comes nearer, the animal may growl more loudly, and even snarl.

Most people will simply back off, and allow their pets to finish their meals in privacy. While this will prevent a confrontation, it poses a problem. If someone visits the home of a resource-guarding canine, and fails to realize the animal is disposed to protecting his food, the visitor may inadvertently trigger an aggressive response. This is especially problematic when young children are involved since they often lack experience with dogs.

If you notice your pet guarding his resources from people, take steps to eliminate the behavior. The cost of ignoring it may involve injuries.

Tips For Shaping The Problem Behavior

Addressing this issue involves desensitization training and counterconditioning. Your goal is twofold. First, you want to help your canine become less sensitive about the presence of others near his toys, meals, and other belongings. Second, you want to teach him that having people near can lead to things he enjoys, rather than losing control of his resources. Here are a few ways to achieve both goals.

Take note of the distance at which your dog starts to stiffen (for example, seven feet). Over time, gradually move closer to him, starting at six and a half feet, and then six feet, five and a half, and so on. This desensitizes him to your presence. He may be uneasy at first, but will slowly become tolerant.

Each time you approach your dog, give him a treat. This teaches him that your presence while he eats or plays with his favorite toy can mean something good for him. As he gains more comfort, begin removing the item he values while providing the treat. Then, return his resource. This is part of desensitizing him to having you near.

Eventually, start to remove items of which he is particularly fond, and give him limited access to them. Doing so trains your canine that you control all of his resources. This is similar to the leader of a dog pack. The leader decides who has access to the pack’s resources, and all other canines must concede to his authority.

Preventing The Problem From Surfacing

The best way to curb resource guarding is to ensure it never materializes in the first place. This is relatively simple to do with puppies since they are so trusting. First, help your puppy associate your presence with meals. That is, he needs to learn that you provide the meals, and thus control the resources. When you approach him with his meals, consider feeding him by hand. This strengthens the notion in his mind.

Second, your puppy needs to associate your presence with other things he enjoys. For example, if he is already eating a meal, give him a treat, or place an extra spoonful of food into his bowl. He’ll eventually look forward to your visits, even during his meals.

Resource guarding can be dangerous depending on the level of aggression in your canine. Resist the temptation to simply ignore the behavior. Instead, devote time to curbing it before you, your family, or visitors are bitten.

As a dog owner, you’ve probably seen a few dog behavior problems. In particular, you will notice that your pet will demonstrate changes in its behavior as it matures. The same as human beings, animals too go through hormonal changes in their bodies, but that is not the only reason for their changing behavior. A great deal of the behavior that you observe in fact develops as habits emerge when an animal is not trained or simply doesn’t get enough attention.

Animals, especially dogs, are often very much like people. They need attention, and when they don’t get plenty of time together with you, they’re certain to react in some way. Just like kids will get rowdy if their parents do not pay enough attention to them, animals will play rough and additionally mess up your house.

At times, you are going to see your dog run through the rooms, bark excessively and knock over items. When dog behavior problems are serious, they are going to even begin to rip up things and defecate on your carpeting. Because they are not able to talk and make a complaint, that is how they communicate their feelings.

The most effective method to deal with your pet’s behavior issues will be to pay appropriate attention to it. When you’re a working person, time can be dedicated to the pet in the evenings or even at night. They should get some play time together with their owner, and they must be walked regularly by the owner, which serves as bonding time. While you are at the job during the day, somebody from your house should see to the dog’s requirements and keep it occupied when it is not sleeping.

Playing fetch is actually a particularly good strategy to exercise a pet dog, and it will not just burn off energy in this kind of activity, but will in addition not have a lot of time to think about doing damage to items at home. Also, letting the animal have a free run of your yard is important. They have to release their energy in quick bursts. This is perhaps the best time to play fetch with them.

Quite frequently dog owners tend to think that dog behavior problems are a result of mood swings. In some cases these moods may be caused by its maturity, and you need to look at whether it’s time to let your dog have a mate. An animal’s psychology is acknowledged to become affected if it does not get to exercise its instinctive needs. Therefore, you’re advised to let your pet live a regular mature life also. You could get a partner for it or what may be the best plan – get your pet spayed or neutered.

Adopting a canine comes with responsibilities. Owners must commit themselves to caring for their pets, providing food, water, shelter, and company throughout their lives. They must be willing to make sacrifices, when necessary. Unfortunately, many people make the decision to abandon their dogs, leaving them to fend for themselves, or face the prospect of euthanization at a shelter. The reasons are varied, and the outcomes are almost always avoidable.

In this article, we’ll present the most common reasons owners abandon their canines. We’ll also offer alternative solutions, so you’ll know there are options.

Health Problems

Many dogs suffer from health issues, some of which can be particularly heartbreaking. For example, hip dysplasia may make it difficult for your pet to move without pain. Digestive issues, skin conditions, and heart and respiratory problems can also test an owner’s patience. These and other health-related challenges prompt many owners to throw in the towel, and abandon their pets.

If your canine suffers from a debilitating health problem, ask his veterinarian whether medications or surgery might help. There may be options you have yet to consider.

Behavioral Issues

This is a common reason for abandonment. Dogs often exhibit behaviors that are annoying and difficult for owners to manage. An owner might make a few attempts to curb the undesired habits, but give up in frustration. There are two noteworthy problems.

First, most behaviors surface because of training. If your pet is displaying behavioral issues, there’s a good chance you neglected to train him properly. It’s not too late. Nearly all unwanted behaviors can be addressed successfully with the right approach.

This leads to the second problem. When owners make attempts to deal with behavioral issues, they often do so with the wrong approach. For example, they might hit a canine that barks excessively. If the animal is barking for attention, such a response will likely encourage him to continue doing so.

If your pet is expressing behaviors that you dislike, consider hiring a professional trainer to help curb them.

Moving Into An Apartment

Most apartment complexes, as well as other communities, have rules against dog ownership. But there are options. For example, some complexes welcome pets, including small canines. If your dog is large, ask the landlord if he or she would be willing to let him live in the complex given certain guarantees.

Also, many owners have successfully worked out special arrangements with their property managers. Some have agreed to pay a slightly higher rent; others happily sign a longer lease; and still others agree to keep their pets indoors during certain hours.

Most people who abandon their canines because they are moving into apartments have not exhausted their options.

Inability To Care For A Pet

Some people become too sick to care for their dogs. For example, an illness might make it difficult for a person to move easily, preventing her from taking her pet for walks. An owner may even become bedridden, and thus unable to feed her canine.

If you are ill, and can no longer care for your pet, check with your friends, co-workers, and family. There’s a good chance someone will step forward to provide your dog with a new home.

Lack Of Funds

Caring for a canine can be expensive. Depending on your pet’s size, food may cost up to $1,000 a year. Toys and supplies may cost another $300 to $400 a year. Grooming and ongoing veterinary care might add another $600 to the annual bill. Medications might cost $500 a year while certain surgical procedures may cost thousands of dollars.

Given this, it’s understandable that some owners feel financially stressed, and compelled to give up their dogs. But again, there are options. Think about ways to stretch your dog’s toy and supply budget; look for clinics that offer routine checkups for a discount; and cut back on the nonessentials.

If you’re forced to leave your canine, and have no other options, do everything possible to find him another home. By doing so, you may ultimately save his life.

If the very best things come in small packages, then a small dog could make the perfect addition to your family. These small innocent beings will quickly win you over with their unconditional love, regular companionship and trademark diminutive manner. In truth, smaller dogs make ideal companion dogs since they can often be by your side, carried about with ease, quickly scooped up into your lap, or even nestled in your carry bag. Paris Hilton’s Chihuahua playing peek-a-boo from her Lady Dior bag is a favorite and much publicized case in point.

Typically, dogs that weigh less than 22 pounds or are shorter than 16 inches are bracketed as small dogs. Naturally, this is simply a rough estimate, and a few small dog breeds are slightly heavier or a lot lighter and even taller and even tinier than this. Take for instance the Chihuahua breed. They’re the tiniest of all smaller dogs weighing in at a meager 6 to 8 pounds and standing proud at a modest six to ten inches tall.

There are actually a stupendous assortment of small dog breeds that can capture your heart. Aside from the itsy-bitsy Chihuahua, you will find the adorable Pug, the silken-haired Maltese, the Beagle with his enhanced sense of smell, the eager-to-please Boston Terrier, the frisky and impish Pomeranian, the energetic Yorkshire Terrier, the long-haired fluffy Lhasa Apso, the lion-faced Pekingese, and many more. Each one of them is just as cute as the other, and you might be spoiled for choice as far as this little league goes.

Small dogs are really important additions to your family. Aside from being fantastic companions and adapting easily to your household environment, in addition they make brilliant watch dogs. So you needn’t worry about your family’s safety with a little dog in your own home. They might be tiny, however the smallest inkling of danger will have them bringing the house down with their deep-throated yelps and barks.

Small dogs can be trained quite readily. They are obedient dogs with an eagerness to please their masters. Consequently, following orders and paying attention to your command comes quite easy to them.

On the whole, small dog breeds are especially low maintenance. The majority of them usually do not shed fur all over the place, and therefore your house won’t be a furry mess. Additionally, these kinds of dogs obtain their fill of physical exercise just by strutting about indoors. So in the event you happen to be low on time and are not in a position to consistently take your dog out to get a walk, you don’t need to worry about him getting lazy or overweight.

Finally, and most significantly, smaller dogs are generally a great hit among small children. Their unintimidating size and unbridled affection makes it less difficult for little children to make friends with these very small creatures. All in all, small dogs are not only the cutest and most adorable of dogs, but in addition extremely helpful and beneficial additions to the family. There is absolutely nothing quite like a cute little doggie to complete that ideal family portrait.

Dog training can be quite vital, especially if you love to socialize. In the event your dog is not properly behaved it can reflect poorly on you. Training your dog to become obedient will also be extremely important. You can set up yourself as being the dominant member and still bond very well with your dog. The training should start at a young age. Let your pet realize that you will be in control of the training also. Here are a few dog obedience tips to follow.

Canines are, of course, animals. They might not recognize how to act or respond in certain situations. They frequently usually do not respond well to punishments either, since they are often confused about what they have done wrong. The best way to train your dog will be to always remain positive. Attempt to reward your pet for any positive behavior shown. This is actually the only way for you to motivate your dog to master great behavior. When they do something wrong, they’re almost certainly going to forget it very quickly as dogs live in the moment. As a result remaining positive in your approach is the only way to train your dog efficiently.

As pointed out previously, canines are pack animals with behavioral instincts. They don’t think like human beings do. They’re far more instinctual beings. They do not understand what you are talking about. By way of example, in the event the leash on the dog gets stuck on something, just about all it would need to do is to walk back until finally the leash is freed. However your dog will more than likely react instinctively by pulling on the leash rather than reasoning out the problem, like a human would. You’ll be able to teach your dog the best way to extricate itself from this difficulty just by practice and training. Consequently, never assume your dog will do something by thinking it through. You need to teach the behavior.

If you expect to teach your pet effectively you need to always be quite firm. Dogs do not comprehend your orders, especially if they are confused. Therefore you need to reward the behavior you’re seeking any time it happens, utilizing the phrase that is the command for the behavior. Eventually, your dog will link that phrase with the behavior you are looking for. Your own behavior towards the dog needs to be consistent also. Don’t confuse your dog by continuously changing your response. At the same time you must be really gentle any time he makes a mistake. Even so, when he displays a bad behavior you need to be firm and not allow him to continue that specific behavior.

Simply by following these very simple dog obedience tips you will be able to infuse excellent behavior in your dog as time passes. Training will not occur overnight, but over a period of consistent time invested with your dog reinforcing the good behaviors you’re teaching.

Training is really a process and you really need to be patient at all times. Expect mistakes and continue to reward your dog for the good behaviors. By keeping these dog obedience tips in mind you’ll eventually have a very properly behaved dog who has a key place in your family.
