<p>Today you&#8217;ll discover my three favourite abdominal exercises, and none of them involve lying on your back, curling your shoulder blades up off the ground or doing situps. These exercises are the Ab Wheel, stability ball Jackknife and the Mountain Climber.</p>
<p>Also, you may choose to do these exercises in circuit fashion for a powerful ab workout that doesn&#8217;t put any stress on your low back.</p>
<p>Now, for the ab wheel, rest on your knees and begin in the upright position. Rollout and then squeeze your abs to come back up. </p>
<p>From there, move immediately into the jackknives. So, with your elbows on the bench and your feet resting on the ball, keep your body in a straight line and brace your abs.  Next, bring your knees into your chest, and then back out.  Instead of placing your elbows on the bench, you can easily do this exercise by placing your hands on the ground.</p>
<p>You can also add in some variations of the stability ball jackknife, including the 1-Legged Jackknife and the stability ball jackknife rotation.  For the rotation, simply bring your knees up and in to one side and then switch to the other side. </p>
<p>The final exercise is the Mountain Climber with a x-body rotation. So, staring from the push up position, then bring yoru knee up to your opposite arm, alternate sides. </p>
<p>So those are my favourite <a href="http://www.nicesixpack.com" target=_self>abs exercises</a> you can do in a circuit to burn fat and get ripped abs. </p>

<p>This is an alternative ab exercise circuit that you can do with just a stability ball and your bodyweight to easily replace the cable <a href="http://www.nicesixpack.com" target=_self>abs exercises</a>.  </p>
<p>Just a warning for those who have low back problems; all of the exercises in this circuit are advanced abdominal exercises, involving more spinal flexion.  So, if you do have low back problems, then you should skip this workout.</p>
<p>To start out, you will do a stability ball Crunch, using a three second eccentric in place of the hanging leg raise.  Do 15 reps for this exercise.</p>
<p>Next, you&#8217;ll move immediately into a stability ball Rollout.  So, with your knees on a mat, and your arms extended in front on the ball, keep your body in a straight line and stretch your abs by rolling the ball out, and then contract your abs to roll the ball back in.  </p>
<p>From here, you&#8217;ll go right into a X-Body Mountain Climber.  In this exercise, start by getting in the regular push up position and then bring your opposite knee up to your opposite elbow and back out.  Alternate sides.  </p>
<p>That&#8217;s it for the circuit.  So rest, one minute and then repeat the circuit two more times for a total of three circuits. </p>

<p>Now that you are warmed up, you&#8217;re going to start this workout with a tri-set or a mini circuit.</p>
<p>Move right into the maximum number of underhanded grip chin-ups in perfect form.  With your palms facing toward you and your hands about shoulder width apart or slightly wider, pull yourself up so your chin is over the bar.  Pull up and slowly back down.</p>
<p>If you can&#8217;t do chin-ups, you can substitute these with underhand inverted rows or you can skip this one.  For inverted rows, set your bar up and grip the bar with your palms facing back.  Row your chest up to the bar and back down.  Do the maximum amount of reps.</p>
<p>Without rest, move immediately into push-ups.  Again, you&#8217;ll do the maximum number of push-ups as you can for this.  When you do these, you&#8217;ll probably only going to be able to do about 60-70% of your normal maximum push up number.</p>
<p>Move immediately into dumbbell forward lunges, alternating sides.  You can either do these in the same place or do walking lunges.</p>
<p>Rest 1 minute and repeat this circuit 1 more time.  This is a little bit of competition for your grip, so you won&#8217;t have great results in the second round, but after you&#8217;ve done this workout for a couple of weeks, you will see improvement with your performance with the second round, especially in the number of push-ups after doing the chin-ups.</p>
<p>In the next superset you will start with dumbbell step-ups.  Put one foot up onto a bench and pull yourself up by driving through your heel.  Slowly lower back down with putting all of your weight on your lead leg.  Repeat this on the other side.</p>
<p>Move immediately into dumbbell pullovers on the stability ball.  If you are not comfortable with your balance on the ball, you can do this movement on the bench instead.  By using the ball, this will allow a little more of a stretch in your abdominals, which is what were after with this.  Slide out on the ball and keep your hips bridged up at all times.  Hold the dumbbell straight up and slowly lower it back down and stretch out.  Contract your abdominals on the way up.  Make sure you keep your hips up throughout the entire exercise for perfect form.</p>
<p>The final superset will start with renegade rows with dumbbells.  Its best to use the hexagon dumbbells on a flat surface so they stay in place.  If you only have rounded dumbbells, you will want to use dumbbell rows instead or you can even use kettlebells.</p>
<p>Place the dumbbells under you in the push-up position with your body in a straight line and your abs braced and your feet apart.  Your external obliques are going to work really hard to maintain that straight body position.  Row the dumbbell up and slowly back down, while minimizing the movement at your hips.  Keep this very strong and very straight.</p>
<p>Move immediately into 2 handed kettlebell swings.  Swing down and back up driving through your hips.</p>
<p>Finish this workout with bodyweight interval training.  This is really a unique training program, but probably one of the hardest ones that I&#8217;ve put together.</p>
<p>Start out with 10 squat jumps, rest for 10 seconds and then repeat this 3 more times, for a total of 4 sets of 10.</p>
<p>Next you will do 10 pogo calf jumps, rest for 10 seconds and then repeat this 3 more times, for a total of 4 sets of 10.  Bounce on the balls of your feet and bring your toes up as you jump up.</p>
<p>After that you&#8217;ll do 10 stability ball jackknifes, rest for 10 seconds and repeat this 3 more times for a total of 4 sets of 10.  You can either do these with your hands on the floor or on a bench.  If you are more advanced, you can hold a plank position for the 10 second rest.</p>
<p>Finally, finish this out with 5 Turkish get-ups per side, rest for 10 seconds and repeat this 3 more times for a total of 4 sets.  Keep your arm extended up the entire time.</p>
<p>Make sure you perform this circuit on a softer surface, not on pavement or concrete.  The best place would be out on the grass or a soccer field.  Make sure you are landing properly too.  If you are not comfortable with the jumps, just so bodyweight squats or jumping jacks or something else that is lower impact.</p>

<p>Youre about to discover an amazing medicine ball abdominal exercise circuit published in Men&#8217;s Health Medicine magazine from the December 2008 issue.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve seen the magazine, then you will have seen there are a lot of crunches and even some sit-ups in there.  But, if you&#8217;re not an advanced college athlete, then you probably don&#8217;t need to be doing those exercises. You especially want to avoid those types of exercises if you sit at a desk all day and have lower back problems.</p>
<p>So, I&#8217;m going to take most of the exercises from that program and do them in this circuit, but replace the sit-ups and crunches with alternative versions that are still effective for your abs, but easier on your lower back.</p>
<p>This is going to be a 10 exercise circuit, with 20 repetitions per exercise.  If you&#8217;re advanced, then you can use a medicine ball; otherwise you can use a basketball, or a soccer ball.</p>
<p>You will start the medicine ball abdominal circuit with the big circles exercise.  So, place the ball above your head and then bring it down and around, and up the other side, and then around again.  Continue this motion for 10 repetitions, and then switch directions for another 10 repetitions.</p>
<p>The second abdominal exercise is the Woodchopper.  To perform this exercise, place the ball out in front of you and swing the ball straight up and down, making sure to squat down while bringing the ball down.  Repeat for 20 repetitions.</p>
<p>Once you&#8217;ve completed all of the Woodchoppers, then move on to the Golf Squat Chop.  Start with the ball beside your head and then bring the ball down to the opposite foot and then right back up.  As you are returning the ball to the starting position, be sure to twist your hips slightly and raise that opposite foot.  Complete 10 repetitions for each side.</p>
<p>After the Golf Squat Chop, you&#8217;ll move onto the Squat Press.  With the ball in front of you, squat down, and on the way up, press the ball above your head.  As you squat down, bring the ball down with you and then back up again.  Again, perform this exercise for 20 repetitions.</p>
<p>Next up in the medicine ball circuit is the Plank Rollout.  To do this abdominal exercise, place your elbows on the medicine ball, and then roll the ball out and in while in the plank position.  Complete 20 repetitions for this exercise.</p>
<p>Once you&#8217;ve finished all the repetitions for the plank rollout, quickly move on to Mountain Climbers.  Place your hands on the ball while down in the push-up position, and bring your knee up to your chest, performing 10 repetitions per side.</p>
<p>The next exercise is the McGill Crunch, named after Dr. Stuart McGill.  In this abdominal exercise, one leg is bent which helps to take the stress off of the lower back.  So, lie flat on your back, with one knee bent and place the ball above your head.  Next, you will curl up, just lifting your shoulders up off the ground, and then back down.  Perform 10 repetitions for each knee.</p>
<p>After the McGill crunches, you&#8217;ll move onto a diagonal Lunge Chop.  For your starting position, stand with your feet hip width apart, and the ball raised above your head.  Now, you will step into a forward lunge and swing the ball diagonally across your body, and then back up.  Be sure to alternate sides, completing 10 repetitions per side.</p>
<p>Next, you&#8217;ll perform the Medicine Ball Rollout.  So on your knees, place your hands on the ball in front of you.  Roll the ball out, making sure to keep your back nice and straight and then back in.  In this ab exercise you do not need to go out very far, but just enough to feel a stretch in your abdominals.</p>
<p>Finally, you&#8217;ll finish off with the medicine ball Jackknife exercise. Again, you will be using a shorter range of motion.  To get in position for this exercise, place your body in the push-up position, place your feet on the ball, and then bring your knees in as much as possible.  Perform 20 repetitions and that&#8217;s it!</p>
